Beware! Cyberattacks Are Increasingly Sophisticated, What Will Lurk in Indonesia in 2025?

Cyber threats in Indonesia are a serious concern. According to a new report from AwanPintar.id, 133.4 million cyberattacks were detected in just the first six months of 2025. While this number is a drastic decrease from the previous year, experts warn that we can't afford to be complacent. The attacks are now much more sophisticated and harder to detect.

Sophisticated Methods and Primary Targets

The majority of these attacks, 68.37%, are Generic Protocol Command Decode, a common tactic used by hackers to probe for security vulnerabilities. DDoS attacks, which paralyze servers by flooding them with traffic, also remain a popular choice. At the heart of it all, Jakarta is the most frequent target, accounting for 58.83% of all attacks. This isn't surprising, given its role as a key economic and government center.

The report also reveals some startling facts: China is the top source of attacks, followed by Indonesia itself, the United States, and others. More specifically, the Kerinci Regency in Jambi is identified as a "launch point" for domestic attacks, though it's likely being used as a proxy by foreign hackers.

The Rise of the Mirai Botnet and Open Vulnerabilities

AwanPintar.id highlights two other serious and growing threats. The first is the resurgence of the Mirai botnet. This network of infected devices can act as a "hacker army" to launch massive attacks, especially targeting Internet of Things (IoT) devices like CCTV cameras and routers that are rarely updated.

The second is a rapid increase in the exploitation of CVEs, or security vulnerabilities. Every month, hundreds of new "open doors" emerge that hackers can exploit to steal data or corrupt systems. Without quick action, these vulnerabilities could lead to disaster.

It's About Quality, Not Quantity

The drop in the number of cyberattacks in 2025 doesn't mean Indonesia is safer. On the contrary, hackers are now using more targeted and difficult-to-trace methods. This report is a crucial reminder that digital security must be a national priority. Without awareness and concrete actions, this "false sense of security" could be hiding a much greater threat in the future.
