Over 100 Chrome Extention Found Violating WhatsApp's Anti-Spam Rules

For many businesses and marketers, WhatsApp is a powerfull communication tool. However, attempts to "automate" and "maximize" reach on the platform are now leading to serious security problems.

A recent report, including one highligted by Malwarebytes, points to an alarming discovery: more than 100 Google Chrome browser extensions have been identified as openly violating WhatsApp's anti-spam rules.

What Are These Extensions Doing?

These extensions are marketed as "helpers" or "productivity enhancers" for WhatsApp Web. The primary feature they offer is the ability to perform bulk messaging or automated messaging.

This functionality is in direct violation of WhatsApp's Terms of Service (ToS), which stricly prohibits sending spam, bulk, or automated messages without permission.

The Dual Risk: Account Bans and Malware Threats

Users who install and utilize these tools face two significant risks:

  1. Permanent Account Bans: WhatsApp actively hunts down and bans accounts detected using unauthorized software or violating their anti-spam rules. Users can permanently lose their WhatsApp accounts, along with all chat history and contacts.
  2. Cybersecurity Threats: Browser extensions have very high permissions. They can read and modify data on the websites you visit. "Illegal" extenstions like these are perfect vector for hackers to:
    • Steal sentisive data from your WhatsApp chats.
    • Inject malware or adware into your browser.
    • Steal session cookies, which can be use to hijack your accounts.

Not Just a Violation, But a Trap

Many of these extensions hide in the Chrome Web Store, disguised as legitimate tools. However, theri true nature is that of a spamm tool. The Malwarebytes report emphasizes that while some may only be spam tools, otehrs likely carry hidden malicious functions.

WhatsApp has repeatedly taken legal action against comapnies that facilitate such practices. This incident serves as a firm reminder that using unauthorized third-party tools to modify an application's functionality is an extemely risky move.

Users are advised to immediately uninstall any browser extension that offers bulk messaging or automation features for WhatsApp Web.
