The Biggest Data Breach in Digital History? 184 Million Accounts from Popular Platforms Are at Risk

A massive data breach has occurred again, this time involving 184 million account data from various digital services. Cybersecurity researcher Jeremiah Fowler discovered an unprotected database containing millions of sensitive details, including emails and passwords.

The leaked data comes from well-known platforms like Microsoft, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Roblox, and even banking and healthcare services. According to a Cybernews report, this database is believed to belong to a cybercriminal group. It's highly likely they collected this stolen data using "infostealer" malware.

This type of malware typically spreads through phishing emails, malicious websites, or pirated software. Once inside a device, it steals important information from the victim.

According to Jeremiah Fowler, the database he found contained login and password data for various platforms, including email services. After examining a sample of the data, he discovered thousands of credentials for major accounts like Google, Facebook, Microsoft, and Apple. More alarmingly, the data also included banking information, government portals, and even 220 official government email addresses from 29 different countries.

To verify the data's authenticity, the Cybernews team reported that Fowler contacted several of the email owners and confirmed that the leaked passwords were valid. Fowler described a breach of this scale as a "gold mine" for cybercriminals. The data is at high risk of being misused for credential stuffing attacks (attempting to log in to multiple services with the same username-password combination), account takeovers, corporate espionage, and other digital crimes like fraud or phishing.

To date, the owner of the database is still unknown. After Fowler reported his findings, the hosting provider immediately restricted public access. However, there's a strong possibility that the party who collected this data can still access it privately.
