Indonesia's Cyber Threats are on High Alert Status!!

According to data, cyberattacks or "traffic anomalies" in Indonesia have surged dramatically, reaching 3.64 billion attacks from January to July 2025. This figure is nearly equivalent to the total number of attacks over the past five years, highlighting the extreme vulnerability of Indonesia's cyberspace.

According to Ardi Sutedja, Chairman of the Indonesia Cyber Security Forum (ICSF), this high number of attacks is due to several factors:

  1. Weak Regulations and Law Enforcement: Existing rules are not yet optimal, inter-agency coordination is weak, and penalties are not a deterrent.

  2. Rapid Digital Transformation: Massive technological development is not matched by adequate cybersecurity infrastructure and literacy.

  3. Indonesia as a Strategic Target: Indonesia's position in Southeast Asia makes it an attractive target for cybercriminals.

  4. Small Business Vulnerability: A staggering 60% of small businesses in Indonesia lack dedicated IT teams to protect themselves from attacks like ransomware or DDoS, which he likens to "building a magnificent house without door keys."

The Role of Law and the Need for Education

Despite these challenges, Sutedja agrees that the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill (RUU KKS) remains important to complement the existing Personal Data Protection Law (UU PDP) and help handle cross-border cybercrime cases. However, he emphasizes that laws alone will not be effective if the public lacks better awareness and understanding of digital risks.

According to him, cybersecurity education must be delivered creatively and reach all levels of society, not just through formal seminars. For example, by using real-life stories of victims, education can be delivered everywhere from coffee shops and mosques to remote schools.

This is supported by data from the BSSN, which states that the majority (around 83.68%) of the attacks are malware-based. This figure shows that the cyber threat is no longer just a potential risk; it has become a very challenging reality for Indonesia today and in the future.
